Hey Siri… DEFINE: STRONG

1️⃣ in FIVE US adults are estimated to be living with a mental illness. That likely means you or someone close to you is struggling with a chronic condition that impacts them at home, at work, in school, in relationships, in the gym.

Mental illness shows up for many days, weeks, and months out of the year, but May is #mentalhealthawareness month so let’s #breakthestigma associated with #depression #anxiety #bipolar disorder #PTSD and other traumas.

My research focuses on exercise physiology in depression and anxiety disorders (especially in Black and Hispanic women with co-occurring Obesity and metabolic syndrome). Getting exercise, eating well, and taking care of yourself is not a linear “one approach fits all” endeavor.

It takes work, support, programs, and patience. This month let’s celebrate what our bodies can do for us to keep us moving forward.

I didn’t reach a single goal I set for April. $I didn’t reach a single goal I set for April. 👉🏾I didn’t hit my paper submission goal. 👉🏾I didn’t hit my 40 mile run goal. 👉🏾I didn’t hit my deadlift strength goal. 👉🏾I didn’t hit my 5x per week protein tracking goal. Capital L - Life hit hard last month and I sit here on May 1st wondering what’s the point of setting new goals because I managed to miss the mark on everything I wanted to do in April. Failure? Frustration? Fear? Yep. Feeling all of those f words 😏 Last month I strained my back, fractured my finger, and got food poisoning 🤕😣🤢 AND I 👇🏾 🙌🏾… finally made a PT appointment that I had been neglecting 🙌🏾… started every week with all laundry done 🙌🏾… spent more time outside, relaxing by the pool 🙌🏾… got a manuscript accepted to a journal 🙌🏾… only ate out three times Here’s the thing: We will constantly feel like we’ve failed if there is only a singular measurement of success. Goals are made for us to have something give us direction, but goals must be evaluated and adjusted as we progress. 📏How are you measuring your own progress in the gym? on your job? in school? in life?
